The Black Sheep of the FamilyJan 11, 2018
Good morning. This is Tom Koster, and I want to welcome all of you to this information session to these podcasts. This is the first podcast that I'm recording in my car. The title of this podcast is The Black Sheep of the Family.
The beep you just heard was the brake on my Mercedes E-Class. It's not to brag, but this is my third Mercedes E-Class. I feel I'm the black sheep of the family. No one else in my family has a Mercedes. Also, no one in my family went bankrupt with their business or privately. I didn't bankrupt privately, but my business went bankrupt in 2009. That's also part of being the black sheep. Also, being part of the black sheep of the family is the fact that no one else in my family spent that much time, effort and money in personal development.
Since 1992, I've spent a lot of money in personal development and traveling and building my knowledge, and going to the US mainly since the year 2000. Go to Tony Robbins events. The first one in 1993, and the last one in 2003 in Miami Florida. What I realized this morning when I woke up is that the effort that I've put in has actually brought me a lot of information, brought me a lot of stuff, brought me a lot of knowledge, and brought me a lot of opportunities. The house that we are living in at this moment, that's the house that we moved into in December 2005. It's the 4th new house we build since 1992.
I just told you that in 2003 I went to a Tony Robbins event, Unleash the Power Within, in Miami, Florida. In 1993, 10 years before, I went to a Tony Robbins event, Unleash the Power Within, in Birmingham UK. Looking back on that, although it's years and years ago, I can honestly tell you that a lot of opportunities came up since that time. It's not to brag, but just to let you know that's me being part of feeling like the black sheep of the family. You may feel the same thing too. Maybe you also feel that you are the black sheep of the family.
I'm still feeling that I'm the black sheep of the family because no one in my family really understands what I do or how I do it, and they are very critical. Basically, I don't get the support that I need for my business from my family or my friends. I get it from the people I hang out with basically in the US. Maybe you feel the same way. I also know that your environment determines a lot about results. I choose my environment wisely. I choose to spend time with people in the US who are like-minded like me. I invest in being there and don't take it for granted. It's not cheap, I have to fly there, mostly go to seminars and meet people there, and hang out with these people and see how we can work together. One of these people is Eric Lofholm from the United States. He's a sales trainer and he's given me permission to translate his information into Dutch, which I did, and I'm teaching that for some time now.
The environment made a lot of impact on the results that I have. Right now, it's Saturday morning, it's 8:15, and I'm driving to pick up my assistant Jelle from Doetinchem. I purposely made an appointment with him to pick him up at 8:30. For me, that's a reason to go up, get up early. I could also tell you that it was a short night because I was working in my office yesterday. 9:00 PM, my uncle called me. My uncle is a former priest. He's a retired priest now. The parish that he had in the past, has allowed me to help them with IT work. They were a client of mine.
Now that he's retired I promised to help him with IT stuff just as a volunteer. I don't charge anything for my services in helping him. He called me and he told me that he didn't have internet connection. I say, "Okay, it's important that you have internet connection. I have some time, so let's say that I'm going to visit you, and I'm going to help you solve the problem." That was 9:00 PM. He's not nearby. I had to drive about 40 minutes to get there and I have to drive 40 minutes back to get back to my home and my office. That's also not to tell you that I'm special or to brag, but also to let you know that's part of being the black sheep because probably no one else in my family or friends would do that for clients or family members. He calls me up, it's Friday night at 9:00 PM, and at 10:00 PM I'm there. I had to take 20 minutes to prepare, and then get in my car and drive to his place and help him fix the problem.
With this, I end the information session about black sheep. Maybe you feel the same way. I'm here to help people like you. You can join my coaching program.
